How do I load games?

Hi guys! I just downloaded the emulator and am having trouble figuring out how to open games. I'm clicking on File>Open GBA, but there are no files for me to open, and I can't find where they are. I downloaded the latest version (1.8.0 (SVN956)) and cannot find any compatible files within the files I downloaded. Can anyone please tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.
