Migrate saves from VBA to VBA-M

Hey guys, just new here and was curious about migrating my save state files from VBA to VBA-M. I'm running on Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard, and was able to download the VBA-M-MacOS-X-0.1.dmg build from the project page.

I had originally started Pokemon Fire Red on the VBA on Snow Leopard, and thought it would be easy enough to take the save game files (.sgm as I understand), as well as the battery saves and copy them into my Library/Application Support/VBA-M folder as instructed in the readme.txt. For some reason it just doesn't seem to pick those saves up, can't load them at all and nothing happens.

The VBA version I was originally running is VisualBoyAdvance 1.7.4, and the games load fine in there, but I'm hoping to switch to VBA-M as the original VBA is a PowerPC app, and as a result won't work if I decide to upgrade to OS X 10.7 Lion later down the road.

I tried putting the saves in ~/Library/Application Support/VBA-M, I tried in the Save States folder, nothing. Am I missing something, running a super old build of VBA-M that doesn't support the saves? If so, how can I move past this?

Thanks very much in advance to whoever takes the time to read/look into this. Much love and respect, just a newbie here.

save states are generally not transferrable. (differences in sound core)

im not sure about save states between platform builds though.

The save files themselves, no, but when I originally got vba-m, I managed to move the game "save" (not the actual .sgm file, the one built in the game) by after loading my .sgm file and saving in the game normally, then exporting the battery file from the original vba. Then I started up VBA-M, loading the rom of the game I was playing (mother 3), and importing the battery file and just used the new save states from there. I don't know if that was the intended function of the battery file exporting/importing, but it did the trick for me. I hope you find this helpful.
