Help me fix "frame stuttering" problem with VBA-M

Post by PaulSupernal »

Hello.

I was using the "old" VBA 1.7/1.8 Link for a decade now, it's a great emulator but doesn't have some of neat features of VBA-M.

I very much want to switch over to VBA-M because of those neat features, but I have a major, major frame dropping/frame stuttering problem with VBA-M. I don't have this problem with either VBA 1.7 or 1.8.

I downloaded the newest build of VBA-M from sourceforge, by clicking on this link:

I tested it on many different games, but the problem persisted with all of them. I get major frame drops, frame stutters, whatever you want to call them. I can make a video showing you side-by-side the VBA-M and VBA 1.8 so that you can see how bad the problem is. Let me know if you want me to make this video...

I tested literally every option and configuration inside VBA-M. But the problem didn't go away. So I thought, maybe it's something wrong with my PC? I downloaded newest Nvidia drivers but it made no difference. I went into BIOS and cancelled the CPU overclocking that I'm normally using. I tried disabling HTT but it made no difference.

I don't know what's causing this problem for me. Are you guys also having this problem? Or is it just on my end? I don't understand why it's happening because:

a) I have a pretty solid hardware and can reach over 1000% emulation speed in turbo mode, so this shouldn't cause performance problems,

b) I have absolutely zero frame drops on "old" VBA 1.7 and 1.8 Link.

Here are my system specs:

Win 7 64bit

Intel i7 4790k (tried both overclocking it and on default core speed)

GTX 980 (not overclocked)

144 Hz monitor Benq XL2720Z (I tried running my monitor on 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz to see if it would make any difference, but the problem persists on all of them)

16GB RAM

Please help me fix this problem - I won't mind donating to VBA-M project if we can fix it together Image/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Edit: I'm also using BizHawk emulator and, similar to VBA 1.7/1.8, BizHawk runs perfectly smooth with no frame drops/frame jerking.
